Although it is one of the smallest countries in South America, Ecuador is home to rain forests, jungles, mountains, islands, lagoons, beaches, deserts, valleys, and snowcapped peaks. All of this can be found in the 24 areas which are protected by the State. There we find colonies of wild animals, among them caimans, anacondas, tapirs, dolphins, monkeys and more than thousand species of birds.
All of this is the explanation why Ecuador is one of the planet’s top 17 nations with respect to biodiversity.
Because of the countries diversity of eco-systems and climates there are lots of different activities to do. Ecuador will also satisfy the visitors who are interested in culture and nature, with activities like bird watching, community tourism, whale watching and visiting indigenous markets. Bird watching can best be done in parks like Area Nacional de Recreación Las Cajas, Parque Nacional Cotopaxi or the Galápagos Islands were birds like parrots, toucans, herons, hoatzin (prehistoric birds) can be seen. Whale watching is one of the most exciting and unique activity in the world. Although whale-watching can be done along the entire Ecuadorian coast, the best spot is in Puerto López, a small fishing village in southern Manabí. Another reason for visiting Ecuador is for its friendly inhabitants, its history and culture. Ecuador's culture and history mirrors the diversity of its landscape. Like much of South America, the Ecuadorian culture blends the influences of Spanish colonialism with the resilient traditions of pre-Columbian peoples. The different groups create a diverse and unique culture with; Amazonian frontier towns, Pacific coast fishing villages, rambling old haciendas, packed markets, and colonial cities. Every town has its own identity and history. Modernization has not robbed Ecuador's cities and towns of their distinct local flavors. Mostly is this because, it is the people and not historical sites that are giving these places their character. Otavalo, long famous for its warm, enterprising indigenous people, continues its friendly tradition in the twenty-first century. The citizens of Banos, with its hot springs and agreeable climate, are welcoming visitors everyday with a warm smile.
Quito , the country's political center, has developed into a cosmopolitan city while maintaining its small own candor and geniality.
