INDIGENOUS MARKETS

Indian markets in Ecuador are well known by their colorful ambiance and diversity. These are some of the most representative markets of each Indian community. One can find everything from wool textiles, native fruits, fresh vegetables, and flowers to jewelry, ceramics, baskets, wood carvings, naive paintings, embroidery, tools and even animals of all sizes.

Otavalo Market Classic (*)
(1 Day/ any day )

Driving to the North of Quito, start your trip in Calderón, a town where the famous bread-dough figures are made, continue the trip to Cayambe for the local specialty "Bizcochos". Arriving at the province of the lakes. one can see the San Pablo Lake at the entrance of Otavalo, (at the skirts of the Imbabura volcano).

Immediately, continue to Otavalo for the famous indigenous market, the largest one in South America, just in time to bargain for colorful and beautiful tapestries, naïve painting, hand-knitted wool sweaters, wood carvings, silver jewelry, woolen and straw hats.

After a delicious lunch in one of the local haciendas, go to Cotacachi, a town famous for its handmade leather clothing. If time allows, a quick visit to Cuicocha lake (An ancient, eroded volcanic crater famous for the deep lake found within.)

Latacunga Market (*)

Latacunga is a colorful market that offers some crafts; there is a special Indian festivity held on Sep 23 & 24 called "Mama Negra" (Black’s mother) where processions, costumes, Andean street music and fireworks take place all years.

Saquisilí is considered the most important Indian village market in the country, this market is more focused on the local inhabitants of remote Indian villages who flood into town to buy or sell everything from bananas to homemade bread.
