DAY 2, Monday

Genovesa ( Tower Island): Prince Philip’s steps & Darwin Bay

We spend the whole day in this beautiful island, considered one of the best spots to see birds, especially the Reed footed booby, rarely found in the archipelago.

The Cliff was our first visit. We have a dry landing to go up the Prince Philip’s steps. We could see frigates, masked boobies, marine iguanas, owls.

The red footed boobies are nesting in the Palo Santo Trees. While the masked boobies nest near the trail.

In an open lava field, we find storm petrels in large numbers.

The trails in this island are very well marked as it is in the entire archipelago. In this island particularly, the landscape is very dry.

We had the chance to see lots of baby birds like the baby of the frigate.

We returned to the yacht, we need to descend a very steep way with rocks but there are handrails and the guides and men of the boat help you always.

The view of the wall in the Cliff is amazing…

Al the visits in Galapagos are well scheduled and with the perfect timing, this allows other yachts with visitors to come to the island and that the islands don’t get too crowded.

Kayaking time! This is one of the 2 spots where we will be able to do this activity. So if you are visiting the islands take the chance and do it. It is a good exercise too.

After the visit we go back to the yacht for lunch. But there is an intruder on board…a Galapagos Gull.

In the afternoon our destination is Darwin Beach, a coral sand beach where swallow-tailed and lava gulls are found near a pristine place with clear waters. Upon disembarking our first contact was with this sweet pigeon…

Sea lions also come to welcome us; they don’t seem to notice our human presence…

One of our guides accompany the English-speaking group, and we decide to do this walking with Daniel, our Spanish-speaking guide, (he speaks perfectly English tough)

Daniel brings us to see a hidden forest of mangroves a few meters inside the beach. There we can found the bird-kindergarten, as he uses to call it, because there are lots and lots of red footed boobies nesting.

We also find colonies of great frigate birds nest. The males inflate their red-throated pouches to attract females as they fly overhead.

Immediately after we arrive to a small lake where the sea lions are refreshing themselves.

We are lucky enough to see also the Galapagos Dove too…

We get a very ample explanation from our guide, until he tells us that we have time to enjoy of a nice swimming. Along the seaside lots of sea lions sleeping.
